First baby born today at Symbiosis University Hospital!

It was indeed a nostalgic moment this morning. It was a different feeling to be changing into the OT scrub and assist my doctor colleague Dr. Kawade for a Caesarean section operation at the Symbiosis University Hospital. A baby girl was born. The first baby at our hospital. It’s Navratri festival and I am certain this little baby is going to bring in lots of luck. What a wonderful coincidence. The hospital is attached to the Symbiosis medical college for WOMEN.
For me, after almost 2 decades it was like coming back to my profession for which I was trained as a Gynaecologist at the prestigious BJ medical college, Pune. Over the last 20 years I have been in higher education. Having seen the transformation  of Indian higher education, from what it was 2 decades ago to what it is today, I think as academicians we need to focus on 3 important things- excellence, equity and empowerment. When we decided to establish the Symbiosis medical college, our Founder Dr. Mujumdar emphasised that this medical college should be exclusively for women.  The percentage of women doctors practising medicine is only 17 %. Therefore Symbiosis decided to empower young girls to take up the profession of medicine by setting up this medical college. Situated in a breathtakingly beautiful and serene campus, this college will provide Scholarships to 5 deserving and meritorious girl students.
The Symbiosis University Hospital is a 850 bedded Hospital which caters to providing health care services to the neighbouring 23 villages that the University has adopted. The State of the Art Hospital has excellent infrastructure and equipments like a 3 Tesla MRI, CT scan, Cath Lab, Endoscopy , Dialysis unit modular Operation theatres and excellent facilities for Indoor patients and OPD patients.
The doctors are well trained and dedicated and are available 24*7. The nursing staff and technicians are equally caring. This hospital has 2 wings. The super specialty hospital and the General Hospital. The treatment in General Hospital is totally free.
Symbiosis which has always imparted quality education will certainly provide quality and ethical health care for the community.
