Last Saturday evening was one of my most unforgettable evenings. I had the opportunity of being with three legends who have created history in their respective fields, through the work that they have done.
Dr. S. B. Mujumdar in education, Dr. R. A. Mashelkar in science, and Mr. Narayan Murthy in Technology!
Why do we call such people legends?
“Legendary people” refers to individuals who have achieved extraordinary feats or possess remarkable qualities that set them apart.
These three individuals symbolize specific cultural values and ideals. They are all humble, ambitious and hardworking.
They are role models, inspiring others through their exemplary conduct and achievements. Figures like Mahatma Gandhi, who led India to independence through non-violent resistance, or Martin Luther King Jr., who championed civil rights in the United States, are similar legendary people.
Dr. Raghunath Anant Mashelkar, a renowned scientist, exemplifies the triumph of perseverance and dedication against all odds. Hailing from a highly modest background, his mother’s hard work supported his education, symbolizing the sacrifices he made for his future. Despite studying under street lights as a young boy, Dr. Mashelkar’s relentless efforts led him to consistently excel in his studies, ultimately shaping him into one of the world’s foremost scientists.
On the other hand, Dr. S. B. Mujumdar’s story shows the power of vision and initiative. As a Botany professor at Fergusson College in Pune, he recognized the challenges foreign students faced in the city. In 1971, driven to foster international understanding and camaraderie, he founded Symbiosis, starting from his own home. Little did he anticipate that this humble initiative would burgeon into one of India’s largest and most esteemed universities.
Today, Symbiosis International University is a testament to Dr. Mujumdar’s foresight and dedication. With campuses across six cities in India and an international footprint with a campus in Dubai, Symbiosis has provided quality education and fostered a diverse and inclusive environment for students from around the world.
Mr Narayan Murthy, a true entrepreneur, took the risk of creating Infosys when no one in India had focused on Technology as a service industry. Despite owning one of the largest Tech companies in the world, Narayan Murthy and his wife, Sudha Ji, are so humble and simple!
Individuals like Mr. Narayan Murthy, Dr. Raghunath Anant Mashelkar and Dr. S. B. Mujumdar exemplify the essence of true legends. Their courage and determination in overcoming personal adversities not only shaped their own destinies but also paved the way for countless others. More importantly, their actions were not confined to personal success; rather, they were driven by a broader vision of contributing to the welfare and progress of society.
Their legacies extend far beyond their lifetimes. By establishing institutions like Symbiosis International University and making ground breaking contributions to science and technology, all 3 of them have left an indelible mark on society. Their achievements continue to inspire and guide future generations, igniting a spirit of resilience, innovation, and compassion.
Indeed, their lives serve as a beacon of hope and motivation, demonstrating how one individual’s dedication and vision can create ripple effects that benefit society for years to come. Their commitment to the greater good ensures that their contributions endure, influencing and shaping the world long after they are gone.
In essence, true legends like Dr. Mashelkar, Mr. Murthy and Dr. Mujumdar embody the power of perseverance, compassion, and visionary leadership. Through their actions and accomplishments, they have not only transformed their own realities but have also enriched the lives of countless others, leaving behind a legacy of inspiration and impact that transcends time.
For the younger generation, studying the lives and careers of such legends provides not just inspiration but also practical lessons on how to navigate challenges, pursue excellence, and contribute meaningfully to society. Their stories serve as guiding lights, encouraging young people to dream big, work hard, and make a positive impact in their own spheres of influence.
