In the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of attending over ten weddings, each more regal than the last. Every wedding has left an indelible mark, creating a memorable experience. I find myself pondering: is it the diversity of people, the array of delectable foods, the distinct traditions and rituals, or simply the uniqueness of each event that creates an unforgettable memory?
Upon reflection, I’ve come to realize that my experience is an intricate blend of all these elements, and each facet is distinct for every Indian wedding. Undoubtedly, the food takes center stage as the most significant attraction of an Indian wedding. The diverse spread not only tantalizes the taste buds but also narrates the stories of the families’ cultural roots. In India, a wedding signifies the union of two households—a merging of backgrounds, a blending of thoughts, cultures, likes, and beliefs. Of the pre-wedding shopping, the jewelry and the beautiful sarees are a must for an Indian wedding. Every wedding unfolds as a captivating saga where friends and relatives shower the bride and groom with blessings, symbolizing the beautiful bond being forged between families.
Lately, there has been a growing trend among the younger generation to opt for destination weddings. In fact, quite a few celebrities such as Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma were quite the trendsetters for destination weddings abroad. Recently, I had also attended my friend’s daughter’s wedding in Istanbul. Set in a heritage location against the backdrop of the Bosphorus river, it was an amazing experience.
However, much that I appreciate the idea of infusing novelty into weddings by selecting beautiful locations, I also resonate with the sentiments expressed by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Narendra Modi Ji. He suggests that we explore the breath taking locales within our own country rather than opting for foreign destinations. India boasts a plethora of picturesque and undiscovered locations that can provide a unique and culturally rich backdrop for weddings. Choosing domestic destinations not only aligns with the idea of promoting and appreciating the beauty of our own land but also contributes to the growth of local economies. It is an opportunity to showcase the diversity and richness of our heritage, making the celebration more meaningful and rooted in the essence of our culture. A wedding is also a source for employment for several industries and people such as catering, decoration, event management. If Indians start exploring the locations in India then it will provide a boost to the economy too.
Just like ‘medical tourism’ and ‘cultural tourism’ promoting ‘wedding tourism’ in India could be a strategic and lucrative initiative. Beyond capturing the interest of the Indian diaspora, it has the potential to attract foreign citizens seeking exotic locations for their wedding celebrations. India, with its diverse and culturally rich landscapes, could position itself as an affordable yet enchanting wedding destination on a global scale. The affordability factor makes Indian destinations highly attractive for couples worldwide, creating a unique niche for the country in the global wedding industry. This not only stimulates the tourism sector but also contributes significantly to the economy, bolstering local businesses and communities associated with these picturesque locales.
Positioning India as the ultimate ‘wedding destination’ would not only showcase the country’s natural beauty and cultural richness but also establish it as a welcoming and affordable choice for couples looking to create memorable experiences. It’s an innovative approach that aligns with both economic and cultural considerations, further enhancing India’s global appeal.
