Monday Motivation: Inauguration of Symbiosis International University, Dubai

A magnanimous event took place in Dubai on the 14th of November, and it was one that matched Dubai’s image of holding a place on the world’s glitterati map. This was the grand inauguration of Symbiosis International University’s first international campus. The event reached new heights with the esteemed presence of His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Tolerance & Coexistence, and His Excellency Dr. S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, as the Chief Guests.

Reflecting on my connection with the region, I fondly recall my six years in the Sultanate of Oman during the early 1990s, when Rajiv and I, both medical doctors, worked with the Ministry of Health. It was here that I developed a deep appreciation for the robust healthcare system Oman had to offer. At that time, almost every weekend we used to visit Dubai- it captivated me then, and continues to inspire me with its rapid dynamism and growth. Over the years, I’ve witnessed how the city’s progressive mindset attracts people from around the world. For all these reasons, Dubai has remained my favourite city, and I have long dreamed of establishing a Symbiosis International University campus here. Now, with Symbiosis’ rich legacy of years, I am thrilled to see this vision come to fruition with our first international campus in Dubai.

When discussing education in Dubai, it’s impossible not to recognize the vital role played by the Ministry of Education, the CAA, and the KHDA. Their commitment, encouragement, and responsiveness have been instrumental in our campus’s establishment. The ease with which we have been able to engage with government leaders—whether it was H.E. Dr. Baniyas, Commissioner of the CAA, or H.E. Ms. Aisha Miran, Director-General of KHDA—has been exceptional. Their approachable, humble, and supportive nature has made the process seamless and inspiring.

Symbiosis’ entry into Dubai’s education sector represents a powerful synergy that will further elevate education as a form of soft power, deepening the diplomatic ties between India and the UAE. Education is a multifaceted tool of influence, capable of shaping perceptions, fostering diplomatic relationships, and attracting global talent. By emphasizing quality, accessibility, and international reach, education can enhance a nation’s global standing, build partnerships, and create a lasting legacy. As Symbiosis celebrates 50 years of educational excellence, coupled with Dubai’s progressive environment, we are confident that this new campus will offer a dynamic and thriving platform for students who aspire to excel academically and professionally in this vibrant city.

I would also like to take this opportunity to commend our 1,000+ alumni working in the UAE, the majority of whom are based in Dubai. They have been steadfast supporters of their alma mater, generously sharing their industry experiences with current Symbiosis students. Our strong emphasis on research will not only foster the dissemination of knowledge but will also drive innovation and knowledge creation in the years ahead.

I am confident that Symbiosis International University’s Dubai campus will serve as a landmark, upholding the vision of Dubai as a leading knowledge economy.
