Monday Motivation: Education as Empowerment, Honouring Dr. Ambedkar’s Enduring Legacy

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar made monumental contributions to education in India—not just through his own achievements, but by championing education as a tool for social empowerment and equality. He was one of the most educated Indians of his time as he held multiple doctorates from prestigious institutions like Columbia University and the London School of Economics and in fact he was the first Indian to earn a doctorate in economics from a foreign university. His academic journey served as a symbol of what education could achieve, especially for marginalized communities.

However, what sets Dr. Ambedkar apart from other academicians is the fact that he used Education as a Weapon for Social Change. I remember his quote “Cultivation of mind should be the ultimate aim of human existence,” and as an educationist, I agree with him completely. He placed education as the foundation for empowerment.

As a policymaker and advocate, Dr. Ambedkar fought for free and compulsory education for all children. He championed reservations (affirmative action) in education for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

To honour Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s legacy and ideals, the Symbiosis Society established the Dr. Ambedkar Museum & Memorial in 1997. Today, we proudly celebrate its Silver Jubilee. The museum preserves many of Dr. Ambedkar’s personal belongings. My mother, Mrs. Sanjeevani Mujumdar, has dedicated her life to the care and preservation of this museum. She has also authored several books on Dr. Ambedkar, which continue to inspire and guide the youth of today.

This year on the 5th of March the the Ministry of Culture, Government of India installed the ‘Ask AI Holobox’ at the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Museum. This interactive AI-powered hologram allows students and faculty to engage with a lifelike projection of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and ask any questions related to the Constitution of India as he is the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, which is his monumental contribution to our nation.

Today on his birthday (April 14) which is celebrated as Ambedkar Jayanti, is often marked by educational campaigns and events. Let us uphold the commitment that Dr. Ambedkar showed towards education and make education accessible to all.
