Recently, I watched a beautiful video that made me pause and reflect.
What does education really mean? What is the purpose of schooling?
Is it simply about earning a certificate after 10 or 12 years? Or is it about preparing young minds for life?
Today, there is immense pressure on students to crack competitive examinations like NEET and JEE. Children as young as those in Classes 7 and 8 begin attending coaching classes, often sacrificing their evenings on playgrounds for hours of test preparation.
It is heartbreaking to see childhood being replaced by an endless race for ranks.
Many parents, driven by the best intentions, hope to fulfil their own unfulfilled dreams through their children. As a result, cracking an entrance examination becomes the ultimate goal.
But should that also become the mission of schools?
Should a school’s success be measured only by the number of doctors and engineers it produces? Or should it be measured by the quality of human beings it helps shape?
Schools have a far greater responsibility.
They should ignite curiosity, encourage students to ask questions, and present real-world problems that inspire them to think critically and become problem solvers. They should connect children with the communities they live in, nurturing empathy, responsibility, and social awareness.
Education must also focus on developing communication skills, confidence, collaboration, and leadership. Students should be encouraged to read newspapers, understand current affairs, and become informed global citizens.
Technology and Artificial Intelligence are undoubtedly the future, and schools must embrace them wholeheartedly. But alongside technological excellence, they must nurture compassion, ethics, and humanity, so that students learn to use innovation for the greater good.
The future belongs not just to those who are intelligent, but to those who are thoughtful, ethical, and empathetic.
