Monday Motivation: Promoting Peace through Science — The Symbiosis Way

Every year, the world celebrates World Science Day for Peace and Development on 10th November, recognizing the vital role that science and scientific innovations play in fostering peace, harmony, and sustainable development. This day reminds us that science is not just about technological progress — it is also a powerful tool for building understanding, empathy, and unity among people.

A shining example of this philosophy can be found in the journey of Dr. S. B. Mujumdar, a visionary botanist and scientist who founded Symbiosis in 1971. The very name “Symbiosis” is derived from a scientific term in botany, meaning a mutually beneficial relationship between living beings. Dr. Mujumdar beautifully extended this concept from the biological world to the social sphere — creating an educational ecosystem where Indian and international students could coexist, collaborate, and grow together in harmony.

At the time of Symbiosis’ inception, Dr. Mujumdar observed that many foreign students studying in India felt lonely and disconnected from local culture. Inspired by the idea of symbiotic relationships in nature, he envisioned an organization that would promote international understanding and brotherhood. Over the years, Symbiosis has grown into a global institution that embodies the idea of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” — an ancient Indian philosophy from the Maha Upanishads which means “The World is One Family.”

Science, Peace, and the Symbiosis Spirit

At Symbiosis, the principles of peace and harmony are not abstract ideals but practical realities nurtured through scientific innovation and community engagement. Just as in nature, where balance among plants, animals, and humans ensures ecological stability, Symbiosis promotes balance between academic excellence, social responsibility, and global citizenship.

The university has adopted 35 villages in its surrounding areas, encouraging students and researchers to engage directly with communities. Through scientific interventions and innovations, students identify real-world problems — in health, water management, agriculture, waste recycling, and education — and work toward sustainable, inclusive solutions. This hands-on engagement helps young scientists understand that true progress is achieved not in isolation but in collaboration with society.

AI for Peace: Symbiosis Institute of Artificial Intelligence (SAI – साई)

Carrying forward this vision, Symbiosis has also established the Symbiosis Institute of Artificial Intelligence (SAI – साई), an institution dedicated to exploring how AI can serve humanity. Here, students learn not just the technical applications of AI but also its ethical and social dimensions. From AI-driven healthcare diagnostics to smart agricultural systems and inclusive educational tools, the institute encourages projects that bridge the gap between technology and compassion.

By applying Artificial Intelligence for social good, SAI embodies the spirit of peace through science — demonstrating how advanced technology can uplift communities, reduce inequalities, and create opportunities for all.

Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam in Action

The philosophy of Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam resonates deeply with Symbiosis’ mission. “Vasudha” refers not only to the human world but to the entire environment — the plants, animals, and ecosystems that sustain life. At Symbiosis, environmental sustainability and peace education are woven into the curriculum and campus life. From promoting renewable energy and waste segregation to nurturing biodiversity on campus, students learn to respect the interdependence of all forms of life.

Building a Peaceful Future through Science

The story of Symbiosis is a testament to how science can be a bridge between cultures and a foundation for peace. What began as a small initiative to help foreign students feel at home in India has blossomed into a global movement for harmony, sustainability, and understanding.

In the true spirit of World Science Day for Peace and Development, Symbiosis continues to remind us that science is not merely about discovery — it is about connection. When used with compassion and wisdom, science can help humanity achieve what nature has always known — that cooperation, not competition, leads to survival and peace.

As Dr. Mujumdar envisioned, Symbiosis is more than a university — it is a living example of peace through science, and science for peace.
