Monday Motivation: The Lasting Benefits of a Good School Education

We all remember our school days fondly. Some of us might have moved schools, while some study in the same school for years. But one thing that everyone will agree to is that quality school education is one of the most valuable investments a society can make in its future.

At its core, school education equips students with essential academic skills that are necessary for navigating the modern world. The sanskars or values imparted by school teachers remain for a lifetime. I remember my school days at St. Joseph’s High School Pashan where I was fortunate to be tutored by dedicated teachers such as Mrs. Mani who taught us Math & Mrs. Koshi who taught us science. This piqued my interest in science and ultimately led me to pursue Medicine.

Mrs. Pariera our P. T. Teacher was a strict disciplinarian. Her strict sense of discipline has still stayed with me. Today, I realize that my school teachers have shaped my personality and imbued me with the love for science, a sense of discipline and resilience. A school teacher is like a parent. He/ She plays an important role in shaping characters of young students.

Another important point of discussion amongst parents is the ‘Board’ from which the child will pass 10th Std. Some parents nowadays feel confused with so many Boards to choose from such as the State Board, CBSE, ICSE, IB & IGCSE. However, instead of following or choosing a Board, parents should focus on the kind of teachers that the school provides, whether the environment is inclusive, the pedagogy used for teaching and most importantly the alumni who have passed out of the school.

The New Education Policy rolled out by the Indian Govt has really transformed school education in India. The 10+2 school system has been transformed to the 5+3+3+4 system, where the first 5 years (KG 1, 2, 3 and Std 1 and 2) are the foundation years, the next 3 years  (Std 3, 4 and 5) are preparatory years, then the next 3 years (Std 6, 7 and 8) are middle school and the last 4 years (Std 9,10,11 and 12) are high school education. With the 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th classes clubbed together, the 10th Board doesn’t really matter anymore. The NEP lays more emphasis on all-round development of students.

At all of Symbiosis’ schools – Symbi Starts which is a Pre-Primary School, Symbiosis Primary and Secondary Schools and Symbiosis International School we encourage students to build confidence, manage their time effectively, and develop resilience in times of challenges. Through projects, exams, and creative activities, students learn how to set goals, overcome obstacles, and reflect on their progress—skills that are invaluable throughout life.

What I have observed through my interactions with thousands of students over the past few decades, is that educated individuals are more likely to participate actively in their communities and democracies. Schools teach students about their rights and responsibilities as citizens, helping them understand social issues, government systems, and the importance of civic participation. This awareness fosters a sense of responsibility to contribute to positive change in society.

Therefore, a good school education does far more than prepare students for tests—it shapes character, builds essential life skills, and lays the groundwork for a fulfilling and productive life. In a world that is constantly evolving, the value of a strong educational foundation cannot be overstated. Investing in School education today means creating a better tomorrow for individuals and society as a whole.
