Last week, during the annual general body meeting of the Symbiosis Society, I had the opportunity to present the Annual Report as the Principal Director. While sharing the report, which highlights the activities of the Symbiosis International University, the Symbiosis Schools, the Symbiosis Museum, and other affiliated institutes, I reflected on the core values that have guided Symbiosis throughout its journey.
This reflection took me back to my early days at Symbiosis, over 25 years ago, when my father, Dr. S. B. Mujumdar, the Founder of Symbiosis, emphasized the importance of the 3 Es: Excellence, Expansion, and Equity. He believed that we must strive for Excellence in everything we do, prioritizing quality as our focus. Expansion signifies growth, urging us to continually evolve. Lastly, Equity reminds us to treat everyone as equals and to uplift those who are less fortunate—an idea that extends beyond inclusivity.
After many years, I believe I have honoured my father’s vision, which has become ingrained in my approach. The 3 Es are crucial not just for institutions but also for individuals.
When reflecting on our various roles—whether as professionals or homemakers—we can find fulfilment by embracing these three principles. In every endeavour, can we strive for excellence and quality. At Symbiosis, every process, whether academic or administrative, aims for a spark of excellence. Similarly, every action we take—be it for our families or our workplaces—should aspire to this standard, earning appreciation from those around us.
The second principle, Expansion, represents growth. At Symbiosis, we have consistently pursued growth since our inception in 1971. We have expanded not only in India but now also internationally with our first campus in Dubai. This growth encompasses the number of students, staff, programs, and courses. While it’s essential to grow thoughtfully and responsibly, we must never stop progressing. Much like a tree that grows from a seed into a vast structure with branches, an organization expands and provides benefits to all.
For individuals, growth is equally important. We should avoid stagnation and continually seek opportunities for personal and professional development. Growth isn’t just about attaining higher positions; it’s also about acquiring knowledge and sharing it with others. Keep learning to broaden your horizons.
As you pursue growth, remember to extend kindness and support to those less fortunate. Acts of generosity and education can profoundly impact others and bring satisfaction to your own life. Your actions set an example for your children and those around you.
These three mantras—Excellence, Expansion, and Equity—have been the guiding forces behind my efforts over the years and can bring success to those who imbibe them.
